A2 SELT – GESE Grade 3
You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in at least CEFR level A2 in Speaking and Listening for:
- Further Leave to Remain (visa extension), required two and a half years after passing an A1 test.
Trinity’s GESE Grade 3 exam = CEFR A2.
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires non-EEA nationals to pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in speaking and listening at level A2 after 2.5 years in the UK, in order to qualify for further leave to remain on the five-year partner or parent route to settlement.

In the A2 English test you will describe daily routines and time, understand and use present continuous tense, understand and use words and phrases about home life, places in your local area and weather. You will also need to clearly pronounce words you have learnt, use short sentences and ask simple questions. All of this will be presented by the examiner on the day.
As per Home Office guidelines, any applicant who is applying Spouse Extension visa in the UK is required to pass English A2 Test. This test is given by the candidate who has already lived in the UK for more than 2 years on Spouse Visa and now applying for Extension of visa. It is a speaking and listening test only.
